This year’s grants are awarded in honor of SEF Board Member, Mrs. Mary Henry, who celebrated her 100th birthday.
Board Members
Katie Aldridge is retired and taught 42 years at the elementary school level in Seattle. Board member since 2000.
Eric Benson is a retired educator of the Seattle Public Schools, with over 25 years of experience at the middle and high school levels (South Shore Middle School, Roosevelt, Rainier Beach, Chief Sealth, and Nathan Hale High Schools.) He also serves as a trustee for the Seattle Schools Scholarship Fund and is the chair of the Nathan Hale Foundation Honorary Board.
BiHoa Caldwell served as principal for a combined 22 years at Whitman and Aki Kurose Middle schools; as an assistant principal at Mercer and Madison; and as a teacher at Boren Junior High, Indian Heritage High and Interim II schools.
Shannon Conner is a former Language Arts and Social Studies Teacher (Nathan Hale High School, 18 years); Assistant Principal (Hamilton International Middle School, 2 years), and presently serves as a principal (McClure Middle School, 10 years). Committed to a socially just public education experience for all students. Board member since 2016.
Brian Coon teaches math at Nathan Hale High School (29 years). Board member since 2016.
Margie Kates is a retired Seattle Public Schools educator, having served as a teacher in several southeast and central-district elementary schools, a district curriculum consultant, and a principal at Madrona and Beacon Hill Elementary Schools. In addition, she was a program administrator and adjunct professor in the College of Education at Seattle University. She has been on the SEF Board since 2016.
Mary Henry is a retired librarian from South Shore Middle School. Board member since 1989.
Jim Oftebro is a retired Seattle School District teacher and principal. Board member since 1999.
John Thorp is a retired Seattle School District teacher, principal, and central office administrator whose career began in 1966 at Meany Jr. High and ended as Interim Special Education Director in 2012.
